Routes are generated and checked by code: three darts or fewer, last dart a double or the bull. Where there's a choice, the chart picks the fewest darts, then an even double like D20, D16 or D8, then the big trebles.
Checkout questions
What is a checkout in darts?
A checkout is the dart, or set of up to three darts, that takes your remaining score exactly to zero and wins the leg. In 301 and 501 the last dart must land in a double or the bullseye. The inner bull is worth 50 and counts as a double.
Why do you have to finish on a double?
Double out is the standard rule for 501 and most 301 games. If a dart takes you below zero, leaves you on 1, or reaches zero without a double, it is a bust: the turn ends and your score goes back to what it was at the start of that turn.
What are the bogey numbers?
Bogey numbers are scores of 170 or less that cannot be finished with three darts: 159, 162, 163, 165, 166, 168 and 169. If you are on one, use your darts to leave a finish for next turn. The highest checkout is 170: T20, T20, Bull.
Why do charts aim for D16 and D20?
Even doubles leave another double when you miss into the single. Miss D16 into single 16 and you are on 16, which is D8. Then D8 leaves D4 and D4 leaves D2. Odd doubles like D19 leave an odd score, so you need an extra dart to set up.
