Qwixx
Dice Track with Paper ScoreCheck more boxes, score more points.
Mini-game: Row Race
A 30-second toy, not real Qwixx rules. The dice roll every second and a half. Cross off the number that matches, always left to right. Anything you skip is gone, and a wrong tap costs a point.

Game Identity
- Name: Qwixx
- Player Count: 2–5 players. Standard: 3–4.
- Teams: No teams. All players compete individually.
- Theme: Commercial dice game by Gamewright. Players simultaneously mark off numbers on a 4-row scoresheet. Points increase the more boxes checked per row; penalties apply for passing on an active turn.
Scoring Mechanics
- Scoring Variant: Accumulative (with a non-linear per-row bonus structure).
- Target Score: No fixed target — game ends when 2 rows are locked or any player has 4 penalties. Highest total wins.
- Unit of Scoring: Points based on boxes checked per row (triangular number progression).
- Lower vs. Higher: Higher score wins.
Rules & Validation
Scoresheet Structure
4 rows:
- Red: numbers 2–12 (left to right)
- Yellow: numbers 2–12 (left to right)
- Green: numbers 12–2 (right to left — descending)
- Blue: numbers 12–2 (right to left — descending)
Boxes within a row must be marked left to right — you can skip numbers, but you can never go back.
Row Locking: To mark off the final number in a row (the 12 in Red/Yellow, or the 2 in Green/Blue), a player must have at least 5 boxes already checked in that row. Locking the row earns an extra check mark and closes the row permanently for all players.
Scoring Per Row (Triangular Number Formula)
| Checked Boxes | Points |
|---|---|
| 1 | 1 |
| 2 | 3 |
| 3 | 6 |
| 4 | 10 |
| 5 | 15 |
| 6 | 21 |
| 7 | 28 |
| 8 | 36 |
| 9 | 45 |
| 10 | 55 |
| 11 | 66 |
| 12 | 78 |
(Formula: n × (n + 1) / 2 where n = number of boxes checked)
Penalties
- Penalty: −5 points each (max 4 penalties). Taking a penalty counts as the player's entry for their active turn.
Game End Triggers
- 2 rows locked (by any combination of players), OR
- Any player marks their 4th penalty.
Validation Rules
- Each row's box-count is monotonically increasing (can only gain boxes).
- Locked rows: enter the final locked count (adds +1 to the row's check count for the lock bonus).
- Penalty count: 0–4 per player. At 4, game may end.
Win Conditions
- Condition: When 2 rows are locked or any player reaches 4 penalties, all players finish the current round. Tally total scores (sum of 4 row scores minus penalties × 5). Highest total wins.
- Tie-Breaker: Most boxes checked across all rows. If still tied, fewest penalties.

Common Qwixx rules questions
The arguments that come up at the table, answered from the official rules. Where house rules differ, we say so.
How many marks do you need to lock a row in Qwixx?
At least five marks in that row. Then you can cross off the last number, 12 or 2, and the lock, which counts as an extra mark.
When do you take a penalty in Qwixx?
Only the active player takes a penalty, when they don't mark anything on their turn. Other players can pass for free.
When does Qwixx end?
Right away when two rows are locked, or when anyone marks their fourth penalty.
Can you go back and mark a number you skipped?
No. Marks go left to right, and anything you skip is lost for good.
Can two players lock the same row on one roll?
Yes. If both can lock it on the same roll, both do, and each gets the lock mark.
